Anna Jarvis is recognized as the founder of Mother’s Day in the United States: 

Anna Jarvis wanted Mother’s Day to be a special day to recognize all that a mother does for her family. Jarvis has been credited for creating the Mother’s Day International Association and organizing the earliest Mother’s Day celebrations in commemoration of her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis. 

Carnations are the official flower of Mother’s Day:

White carnations were used to symbolize motherhood and given out during the earliest Mother’s Day celebrations. Pink carnations are now the most commonly gifted carnation color on Mother’s Day and represent appreciation and gratitude.
